Treasurer's Report 12/21

Including the Scalzi $(3178.10), which isn't in hand but is enroute, the awesome and stupendous Help Vera community has raised $30,685.91 in 688 contributions (plus however many put $ in the tip jar on Scalzi's site).

Here's an updated graph that I hope is easier to read. Boundary numbers go on the left, so $5 is in the $1-5 rather than the $5-10.

OH and additional accolade to guppiecat, as well, who helped organise and run stuff here, even though he didn't know Norilana Books or Vera beforehand (from what I remember reading in comments).

Thanks, it's nice to be noticed. :)

And you're right, I did not know Norilana Books or Vera. I followed over here from Catherine M Valente's blog. It seemed like something I could help with, so I did.

It does seem, though, like an amazingly creative and supportive community formed around Vera. I've been thinking recently of ways that the community could be kept around after the fundraising is over and maybe use the respective talents to help other members with their creative careers and doign cross promotions, thereby changing the focus from mitigation towards ongoing operation (sorry, I'm a consultant, business speak has infected me).

I wonder if that would be of general interest.

I'm already talking with [info]rose_lemberg about putting together some notes/essays so that if another community needs to do this, they have a more solid workable plan to follow. That, however, can wait until after the holidays. :)

(Now I must go buy books from Two Cranes Press, having just recently become aware of them.)

The Two Cranes Press site you linked is blocked by Websense as a "Malicious Website." What's up with that?

Websense is a good web filtering system, but clearly not the best (guess what I consult in? ;)

There's nothing there that I would consider blockable, unless they are equating "small press" as "publish porn", which would an error on their side.

(By the way, two of the books I was going to buy are sold out, so I only got one. One of the drawbacks to small presses, I suppose.)

Checked the link and there may be a problem.
Triggers on:
Bloodhound.PDF.3
(which gets analyzed then quarantined on my system and cleaned, two instances)

after donating my little bit, i've sort of been keeping track of posts & comments in this community & have found it incredibly fascinating just how well & effective it functioned.

so when i saw this comment, i thought that if you & the others had any suggestions/ideas for another community that just cropped up, to help them maximize their efforts...

i have no affiliation with this person other than hearing about the situation, friend of a friend situation, much like with vera.

I have already offered assistance over there, but haven't heard anything from them.

If they want help, I'll gladly give them guidance until all of our thoughts for this community are gathered. I still think that it's important for us to wrap this particular effort up, but don't really plan to start that until next week (assuming that [info]dsmoen and [info]rose_lemberg agree).

Sartorias beat me to it, but it bears repeating: you, Deirdre, and Rose, and Josh, deserve huge accolades, too. Without you, the organizational push and palpable concern wouldn't have come through as much as it did.

You're all awesome!

Julie

PS. I loved the Validation movie in the previous post, too. Good stuff!

Yes, more congratulations and praises from me, too! This was amazing. Long may Vera prosper now!

For how long will the email be available for (possibly additional) PayPal donations?

I think the end of the year will allow the stragglers in. If someone needs longer, they can email the address above and I can keep it open.

It's just nice to have it end cleanly so my PayPal accounting isn't quite as complicated.

I consider it an honor to have been able to help.

An fiercely independent elderly neighbor down the street was ill, and was mortified when we started pitching in. What she didn't realize is that to give makes two people happy, not just one.

I had never known Vera, and would not have been able to participate if I hadn't found a link in my LiveJournal Friends posts. Thank you for allowing me the pleasure of knowing that Vera and her mom have room to breathe!
